Prize Name: The Directors' Choice Awards (The DCAs)
Renamed in 2005, the Directors' Choice Awards were launched at NMTN's
founding 23 years ago to highlight the best works submitted to NMTN's
Evaluation Program, which enables the creators of new musicals to
receive objective and constructive critiques of their new musicals
by professional directors, regardless of their proximity to New
York or their connection to the professional theatrical community.
In the first of the three step process of critical review, NMTN
Evaluators (all of whom are professional musical theatre directors)
read every word of every submitted script and listen to every note
of music. They then fill out extensive Evaluation Reports which
are copied and returned to the creative teams. These valuable reports
contain comprehensive reactions to the material and helpful, objective
hints for improvement.
Works cited as having superior quality are tracked through two additional
stages of competitive review. Ultimately, each DCA recipient will
have been thoroughly evaluated by between 8 and 10 professional
directors, as well as a celebrity Guest Artistic Director. Up to
three DCA winners are selected from this program each year, with
each receiving a cash prize of $1000 toward a presentation of the
work at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. In addition, DCA
recipients are eligible to participate in NMTN's prospective regional
performance program, BroadwayUSA!
The 2006 DCA recipients will be chosen from among the works submitted
to NMTN's Evaluation Program prior to the opening of the NYMF submission
window (January 9th, 2006) as well as from the works selected by
NYMF for its 2006 Festival. The Evaluation Program will be relaunched
after the NYMF submission window closes (on March 17th) as part
of a coordinated submissions process for all of NMTN's programs.
NMTN's Evaluation Program and Guest Artistic Director
Charles Repole have selected three shows to receive
NMTN's 2006 Directors' Choice Awards.

I can only think of how much this would have helped us back when
we needed it, and how useful it will be for young writers in the future."
