NMTN sets industry standards for the evaluation and presentation of new music theater works through its two
major programs, the Evaluation Program and the New York
Musical Tehatre Festival, and through awards and honors designed to draw attention to promising new projects.
- THE EVALUATION
PROGRAM
Writers and composers are invited to submit their shows to
NMTN's Evaluation Program, which for more than two decades
has been providing the creators of new musicals with quality
feedback from professional theater directors, choreographers,
and musical directors.
Each submission receives two comprehensive written assessments
- NMTN's Evaluation Report - prepared by individual members
of our Evaluation Committee (comprised of working theater
directors, choreographers and music directors). These reports,
unique in the industry, provide detailed information and invaluable
professional perspectives intended to aid and guide writers
during their work's development process. The Evaluation Program
will return your musical or opera, with two completed Evaluation
Reports, within two months of receipt.
Submissions that are considered "market ready" and possess
a requisite quality may be nominated for the awards administered
by NMTN, for inclusion in the New York Musical Theatre Festival
and for presentations by NMTN's affiliates. To be considered
for these opportunities, your submissions to the Evaluation
Program must be received by May 1, 2008.
- THE NEW YORK MUSICAL THEATRE FESTIVAL
"It's not a revival - It's a revolution!"
An annual fall event, NYMF
presents more than thirty full-length, fully-produced new
musicals during a three-week period in New York's famed theatre
district. These wonderful new shows feature some of the finest
professional actor-singers in New York's unparalleled talent
pool.
AWARDS
Each year, three works from the Evaluation Prgoram are chosen to receive DCAs, partially subsidized readings at the
New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Originated by Mae Richard, founder of the Theater for the American Musical, the TAM Award is presented to the musical in the NEw York Musical Theatre Festival
which best exemplifies the qualities of the musicals in Broadway's Golden Age: good "book musicals" with songs taht move the drama along.
FUTURE PLANS
In addition to the Evaluation Program and NYMF, NMTN is actively
developing two new programs designed to expand the reach of our already-established
programs and bolster local live performance art throughout the United States:
-
In communities around the USA, NMTN aims to organize centrally
coordinated but locally-produced festivals featuring concert
or staged presentations of award-winning new musicals. The
goal of the program is to expand the range of potential production
opportunities for new quality musical while giving regional
theatre-goers the all-too-rare opportunity to see and hear
brand new works locally. Prototypes of this program were successfully
produced in Chicago, Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Sarasota
and generated independent productions of quite a few of the
featured shows.
-
CAMPUS MUSICALS
Through this program, NMTN will work with university theatre departments and college student organizations, delivering one of NMTN's
professional director-evaluators for a one-week residency culminating in a staged or concert performance of a DCA-winning new musical.
Students will have a month to prepare for the one-week residency and will benefirt from the experience of developing a "new work" and working with a
professional artist from New York's theatre community.
